A Journey Behind the Microscope – Celebrating Laboratory Week- Feby Mol Francis, Medical Laboratory Scientist, NewZealand
Every profession has a story, and mine began with uncertainty, determination, and a quiet curiosity about making a difference. After completing my higher secondary education, I found myself searching for a career that was not only stable, but meaningful—something that would contribute to society in a real and lasting way.
It was during this time that a family friend, a laboratory technologist, introduced me to the field of Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT). The path was not widely encouraged; many advised against it due to limited opportunities in the industry. But something about the profession resonated with me. I chose to follow it—not because it was easy or popular, but because it felt right.
My academic journey in this field began at Fr Mullers Medical College, where I received a strong foundation in laboratory sciences. The institution played a crucial role in shaping my technical knowledge, discipline, and professional outlook. The comprehensive coaching I received there went beyond textbooks—it emphasized hands-on training, analytical thinking, quality assurance, and a deep understanding of diagnostic processes. This early mentorship gave me the confidence to step into the professional world with clarity and purpose.
My career officially began in 2013 at Medical Trust Hospital, Kochi, Kerala, India, where I took my first steps into laboratory science. Those early days were filled with learning, challenges, and growth. It was here that I was trained, refined, and gradually transformed into a professional, building a strong foundation for my future.
As I progressed, I recognised the importance of advancing my knowledge. I pursued higher education and completed my Master’s degree, strengthening my expertise and preparing myself for global opportunities.
In 2015, I achieved a key milestone by passing the Qatar Prometric Examination, which opened doors to international experience. By 2017, my journey had taken me to the United Arab Emirates, where I continued to expand my skills and adapt to diverse healthcare systems and laboratory standards.
However, one of the most defining phases of my journey came in New Zealand.
When I first attempted the New Zealand Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) examination, I relied on self-learning and personal references. Despite my efforts, the outcome was not successful. It was a moment that tested my confidence and made me reflect deeply on my approach.
Determined to improve, I sought structured guidance and enrolled with SimplyMED. The comprehensive coaching I received there made a significant difference. Their focused training, exam-oriented approach, and in-depth coverage of International laboratory standards, regulations, and best practices helped me bridge the gaps in my knowledge. More importantly, it gave me clarity, direction, and renewed confidence.
With disciplined preparation and the right guidance, I reattempted the examination in 2025—and this time, I succeeded.
Today, I am proud to work as a Laboratory Scientist in New Zealand. Every sample I process and every result I validate contributes to a larger purpose. Behind every test lies a patient, a family, and a story. While our work often happens behind the scenes, its impact is profound—supporting clinicians, guiding treatment decisions, and ultimately saving lives.
This Laboratory Week, I reflect not only on my journey but also on the essence of this profession. It is a field built on precision, resilience, and continuous learning. And even behind the microscope, we make a difference—every single day
